How do you create the perfect permanent fence for cows?
A durable and reliable permanent fence is essential for safe pastures for cows. Over longer distances, good conduction is important so that the voltage from the energiser reaches the entire pasture. Permanent fences are mainly found along plot boundaries or field paths and form a strong basis for the more flexible mobile fences. In addition, a permanent fence should be as low-maintenance as possible and last for years, with only occasional tensioners needing to be adjusted. Discover which components are essential for the ideal permanent fence for cows.
The solution in brief
A strong permanent fence for cows starts with a highly conductive steel wire with high tensile strength. This ensures that the clamped wire remains taut. The wire can be easily tensioned using a handy tensioner with a loop for the end post. A tension spring is essential to compensate for expansion or contraction due to temperature differences.
The basis of a durable fence is solid, well-anchored hardwood posts that can easily withstand the tension for years. The Gallagher Line Post offers a durable and low-maintenance solution for the intermediate posts. Want complete control? Then add a fence monitor. This allows you to divide the fence into zones and gives you direct insight into the voltage and condition of the fence via the app.

The ideal posts
For a durable fence for cows, the hardwood Insultimber posts and Gallagher Line Post posts are the perfect combination. The Insultimber posts are crucial for the start, end and corners of the fence; they ensure that the tension in the fence is maintained properly. Make sure they are deep enough in the ground. Once installed, you won't have to worry about them for years: while normal wooden posts last around 5-10 years, Insultimber posts can last up to 30 years! What's more, insulators are not necessary, as the post itself is insulating.
The Gallagher Line Post 1.40 m is ideal as an intermediate post for permanent fences for cows. The big advantage is that it is quick and easy to install; you don't need to pre-drill and you can quickly drive the post into the ground with a special rammer. You also don't need to measure how deep the post goes into the ground, as it can only be placed at one depth. This also applies to the wire heights and the installation of the wire. The post has notches at different heights where special clips can be clicked into place, making insulators a thing of the past. Thanks to the fibreglass core, the post is not only strong but also flexible. This is safer for cows in the pasture and makes the post less vulnerable if it is hit by a lawnmower or other agricultural machinery. If the posts ever need to be removed from the ground, this is relatively easy with a post lifter. With a service life of up to 25 years, you won't have to worry about your Line Post fence for a long time.

Tension
High tensile wire is made to last for years with little maintenance. It is highly conductive, especially the ElectroMax wire. This wire lasts much longer than standard flat wire because the special zinc-aluminium coating ensures that it rusts less quickly. This coating also makes it more conductive. With a thickness of 2.65 mm instead of the standard 2.5 mm, this is the best choice for a permanent fence.
The high tensile wire stretches very little and can therefore be put under tension. This is safer for the cows and makes it possible to increase the post spacing to up to 15 metres. Make sure you use the right accessories. The end tensioner kit is the simplest option for tensioning the wire. This tensioner already has a loop that you can hang around the end post, so you don't need any extra material. A tension spring is essential to compensate for the difference in tension caused by temperature fluctuations. This prevents the wire from sagging when it expands or, even worse, damaging the corner posts or insulators when it contracts. For insulators in the corners or at the start posts, the reinforced S insulator is the best choice: once installed, you won't have to worry about it for a long time.

Maximum insight and control per zone
Regularly checking the voltage is crucial for a safe fence. With the Gallagher i Series fence monitor, manual testing is a thing of the past. By installing these monitors at various locations in the pasture, you get insight into the status of your fence per zone. The app or LCD monitor of the i Series energiser shows you the voltage and amperage of each zone at a glance. If there are any problems, you are immediately notified and can locate, prioritise and solve them much faster.
