Reliable solar-powered grazing, all year round
Solar-powered energisers are becoming increasingly common these days. In the past, farmers typically relied on energisers powered by heavy 12V batteries or 9V batteries. Now, however, a wide range of solar-powered alternatives are available. For more and more farmers, choosing solar energy is a logical step forward. These devices are lighter and much easier to transport, and they come equipped with an integrated battery that automatically recharges in daylight. This ensures the energiser keeps working reliably at all times.
Smart technology as the basis for security
In the 1980s, Gallagher introduced the first solar-powered electric fence energiser. Gallagher has continued to develop the technology since then, says Andy Hales, a specialist at Gallagher. ‘Gallagher solar-powered devices are reliable all year round. Gallagher uses the most efficient batteries, solar panels and electronics. In addition, our devices use the unique Gallagher battery management system.'
The Gallagher battery management system is contained in a chip that is incorporated into the energiser. Andy continues: ‘The system continuously seeks a balance between expected consumption, solar yield and battery charge. If there is an imbalance for a longer period of time, for example during a period of heavy cloud cover, the system automatically adjusts its current pulse to save energy and charge the battery.’
Growing interest
For years, we've seen a significant increase in sales of solar-powered devices," Andy explains. "Five years ago, we sold more solar energisers than other mobile solutions for the first time. The combination of reliability, lower costs, and reduced hassle with batteries is increasingly becoming the deciding factor."
More power from a lighter device
Gallagher's new generation of solar energisers features lithium batteries. These devices charge three times faster, extracting the maximum energy from available daylight. Lithium batteries also offer a significantly longer service life compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, making the new Gallagher models even more reliable for year-round use. The lithium battery is fully integrated into the device, providing extra resistance to weather influences and insects. Finally, lithium models are a lot lighter, making them significantly easier to carry around the field.

The new S120li, the latest addition to the Gallagher Lithium range, is a major step forward. Not only in terms of reliability and weight, but also in terms of performance. Compared to other 1 joule devices, it maintains up to 60% more voltage on the wire on fences with a lot of vegetation. In practice, this can make the difference between a fence with too little voltage and one that keeps your animals safely in the pasture, concludes Hales.
